First Day Workshop on Statistical Machine Learning Methods for Genomic Prediction Using R Program

Statistics Study Program of Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta held a workshop as a continuation of the Visiting Professor program, presenting Professor Osval Antonio Montesinos López, Ph.D. from Universidad de Colima, Mexico. This activity lasted for five days, namely on June 17, 18, 19, 20, and 23, 2025, with the theme "Statistical Machine Learning Methods for Genomic Prediction Using R Program". Workshop participants included students of Statistics, Mathematics, Physics and Biology Study Programs, FMIPA UNY.

The first day of the workshop was held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at 10:00-13:00 WIB in the FMIPA UNY Ballroom. In this session, Prof. Osval presented three main topics, namely the basics of statistical machine learning methods, evaluation matrices for measuring prediction performance for various types of data, and important aspects of statistical learning in genomic selection. In the first topic, he explained the basic concepts of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning, classification of methods in statistical machine learning, reasons for the popularity of deep learning, and the problems of overfitting and underfitting that can be overcome with cross-validation strategies. Furthermore, various types of evaluation matrices were also explained to assess model performance, both for quantitative and qualitative data. The last topic discussed the aspects and important roles of statistical learning in genomic selection, especially in the field of plant breeding which is now widely used because it is able to predict plant characteristics more accurately and efficiently than traditional phenotype-based selection methods.
