From Theory to Practice: UNY Statistics Equips Students with Insights into Statistical Data Collection

Yogyakarta, September 24, 2026 — The Statistics Study Program at Yogyakarta State University (UNY) hosted a practitioner lecture for the "Survey Analysis and Design" course, focusing on the topic of "Statistical Data Collection & Processing." The event featured Supendi, S.Si., M.A., a Senior Statistician at the Central Jakarta City Statistics Indonesia (BPS) office, as the guest speaker.
Held online, the event offered students an opportunity to understand the practical application of survey concepts directly from a professional in the field. The material covered the entire process—from an introduction to data collection and sample determination to the preparation and execution of data collection, and finally, the finalization of raw collected data.
In his presentation, Supendi emphasized the importance of data collection as the foundation of the statistical process. Data collected systematically using appropriate methods and instruments ensures the availability of relevant, valid, and reliable information. Students also explored the distinctions between censuses and surveys, as well as between primary and secondary data. Regarding sampling, students were introduced to both probability and non-probability sampling methods, including simple random sampling, systematic sampling, stratified sampling, cluster sampling, purposive sampling, and quota sampling. Beyond theory, the discussion highlighted practical aspects of survey implementation, such as personnel preparation, data collection instruments, the use of technology, data security and confidentiality, and raw data management. The session was interactive, featuring discussions and a Q&A segment. Students had the opportunity to relate the course material to real-world conditions, gaining insight into the challenges of determining samples and managing survey data.
Through this practitioner lecture, the UNY Statistics Study Program continues to promote learning that bridges theory and practice, while broadening students' understanding of how statistical science is applied in professional statistical activities.
