The Successful Implementation of the Data Analysis and Mathematical Modeling Strengthening Workshop for Indonesian Students at National Dong Hwa University, Taiwan, Was Colored by the Challenges of Typhoon Ragasa

Hualien, Taiwan – The Community Service (PkM) activity titled "Workshop on Strengthening Data Analysis and Mathematical Modeling for Indonesian Students at The National Dong Hwa University, Taiwan," held from September 22 to 24, 2025, at National Dong Hwa University (NDHU), Taiwan, was a success despite facing challenges caused by Typhoon Ragasa. The workshop, which aimed to improve data analysis and mathematical modeling skills for Indonesian students, was conducted by the PkM team from Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) in collaboration with the Department of Applied Mathematics, NDHU. However, the workshop was not only attended by Indonesian students at NDHU, but also attracted the participation of alumni and several staff from the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Indonesia, who attended the online sessions.
Day 1: Introduction to R Software, Economic Models, and Institutional Collaboration
The workshop opened on Monday, September 22, 2025, in Room A307 of the iMac Classroom, Building 1, Department of Applied Mathematics, NDHU. The session began with an initial survey to gauge participants' familiarity with R software. The first day's presentation was delivered by Ezra Putranda Setiawan, M.Sc. (lecturer in the Statistics Study Program at UNY), focusing on an in-depth introduction to the use of R software and its programming, as well as an introduction to several economic models and their applications. In the afternoon, the team had the opportunity to meet with the Head of the Department of Applied Mathematics at NDHU, with the important agenda being the signing of an Implementing Arrangement (IA). This collaboration is expected to form the foundation for closer academic and research collaboration in the future.
Day 2: Challenges of Typhoon Ragasa and Online Session on Structural Equation Modeling
On Tuesday, September 23, 2025, the Community Service Program (PKM) faced natural obstacles. Due to Typhoon Ragasa's impact on Taiwan, the Taiwanese government ordered the closure of schools and offices, including those in Hualien County. Therefore, the Community Service Team quickly decided to change the workshop format to a fully online session via Zoom that day. The main topic on the second day was Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), presented by Prof. Kismiantini, Ph.D. (lecturer in the Statistics Study Program at UNY). Participants were taught two main approaches: covariance-based and partial least squares, with implementations using the R programming language. The discussion also included examples from recently published studies.
Day 3: Introduction to Mathematical Modeling
On Wednesday, September 24, 2025, the threat of Typhoon Ragasa had passed, allowing the workshop to be held offline again. Dr. Nikenasih Binatari (lecturer in the Mathematics Study Program at UNY) delivered the third session, beginning with an introduction to the basic concepts and steps of mathematical modeling. The session then continued with an in-depth discussion of the application of system dynamics to two case studies: the Logistic Growth Model and the Lotka-Volterra Predator-Prey System Model.
The workshop concluded on Thursday, September 25, 2025, with an evaluation and follow-up plan. Prof. Wei-Ying Wu, Ph.D. (partner, lecturer in the Department of Applied Mathematics at NDHU) expressed his deep appreciation for the initiative and specifically thanked Prof. Kismiantini for organizing the workshop, which successfully introduced advanced statistical knowledge and mathematical modeling through lectures delivered by Prof. Kismiantini (Statistics Undergraduate Program), Dr. Nikenasih (Mathematics Undergraduate Program), and Ezra Putranda Setiawan, M.Sc. (Statistics Undergraduate Program). Underscoring the importance of this event, Prof. Wu stated: "This event not only enriched Indonesian students at National Dong Hwa University (NDHU) with valuable statistical and mathematical insights, but also established a collaborative bridge between Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) and NDHU." In addition to enriching knowledge, the visit also opened the door to exploring future collaboration opportunities, including graduate degree programs and joint research initiatives, strengthening the strategic relationship between the two institutions.
