On November 14, 2015, the Department of Mathematics Education, Yogyakarta State University held a National Seminar on Mathematics and Mathematics Education. The seminar is an annual routine agenda for the UNY Mathematics Education Department. The theme of the 2015 national seminar is "Developing 21st Century Skills Through Mathematics Research and Mathematics Education". The main speaker at the seminar was a statistics expert from Gadjah Mada University, namely Prof. Dr. Rer. Nat Dedi Rosadi, and a Mathematics Education expert from UNY, Dr. Sugiman, M.Sc. In his speech, Dr. Ariyadi Wijaya as Chair of the Seminar Committee reported that there were 275 paper presentations. Based on the selection results, there were 235 papers published in proceedings. This seminar was also attended by 127 non-speaker participants from various universities and agencies in Indonesia.

Prof. Dr. Rer. Nat Dedi Rosadi presented various recent research in the field of statistics, including about big data. Apart from that, he also explained various programs for processing statistical data that can be obtained and used for free (freeware). Regarding the issue of education, Dr. Sugiman, M.Si emphasized the importance of the role of teachers in learning mathematics. In a student-centered learning approach, teachers are required to be able to position themselves appropriately. On the one hand, teachers must provide opportunities for students to construct their understanding of concepts. On the other hand, teachers must provide appropriate and proportional guidance so that the process of constructing students' independent understanding of concepts can run correctly.

In the parallel presentation session, the participating speakers presented their research work. The non-speaker participants seemed quite active in responding to the various papers presented. (Ariyadi)
