TWO UNY STUDENTS WON GOLD MEDALS IN CAIRO, EGYPT

UNY students who are part of a team from the UNY Research Student Activity Unit, Rifaldy Fajar (Mathematics 2014), and Rini Winarti (Biology Education 2014), won two gold medals in The Egyptian International Invention and Innovation Exhibition (EGYPTINVENT) 2016 in Cairo, Egypt which was held on March 8 – 10 at the El Gezirah Youth Center. An annual competition event held by the Association of Egyptian Inventors Syndicate (EIS) in collaboration with the World Invention Intellectual Property Associations (WIIPA), Ministry of State for Youth Affairs of Egypt, Egyptian Society for Woman and Youth Inventors (AAEWI) and Beni Suef University.

This event was attended by hundreds of inventors from several countries, including Malaysia, Indonesia, South Korea, India, Sri Lanka, USA, Bosnia, Thailand, Taiwan, China, and several other countries where participants were divided into several fields with very competent judges and are a representative of several world research associations. The UNY team, which at that time was represented by Rifaldy and Rini, was part of the Health class with the innovation specification Cytotoxic Testing Results of Ethanol Extract of Fractination Carica Dieng Seeds (Carica candamarcensis) toward  T47d Breast Cancer Cells Using MTT Method while the other finding was by Rifaldy with Mathematical Model and Stability Analysis on the Spread of Disease of Gonorrhea. According to him, this class is a very tough challenge because the rivals are the world's Top 100 innovations who have been selected by the organizing committee. Their team had previously received a scholarship from the organizers in the form of free registration entitled to their innovations being in the 100 best and entitled to represent Indonesia in EGYPTINVENT 2016. After winning the two gold medals, they again won The Best Presentation for the Health Category.

This competition has an exhibition and presentation concept where each invention gets a table with a jury using a question-and-answer presentation system in English. The tools that must be provided in this event are posters, brochures, articles, and invention products. Judges from various countries rotated to visit each table and asked several questions to the inventors. Description of the work, product advantages, implementation, and patent matters are mandatory questions for the jury.

In their journey, Rini and the team always had many obstacles such as time management, trials, and preparation. However, for them, obstacles are challenges that must be resolved together because unity is the most important determining factor. He hopes that all UNY colleagues and Indonesian students will always make a big contribution to their country. Rini and the team would like to express their deepest gratitude to UNY, the Indonesian Embassy in Egypt, PPMI Egypt, and all those who have supported them from the beginning of the research to the achievements in this competition. Hopefully, in the future, their findings can be further developed so that they are useful for the nation and state. (Rifaldy)
